From the outset, the planned outcome of a portrait commission is regarded as a team effort, to be clarified by discussion and negotiation between the sitter and the artist. Two sittings of approximately 3 hours each on separate days are normally required. These may occur either in my studio or at a place of the sitter's choosing. The portrait is then completed in the studio in the absence of the sitter, referring if necessary to digital photographs. Sittings can be reduced to one, or even dispensed with altogether, if good quality photographs are available. However, this is not recommended, unless sittings are out of the question, as a less vital image can result.

Portraits are undertaken in acrylic rather than oil paint. The acrylic paints are artist's quality, are as lightfast as oil paints and are tougher. They dry much faster than oils so that the painting can progress rapidly without having to wait for previous applications of paint to dry. This makes the best use of the sittings if time is limited.

A digital photograph of the portrait approaching completion can be provided so that any practicable modifications required by the commissioner can be undertaken.
