"This prize was awarded, as stated, 'for excellence', John's portrait was both technically good and was executed with wit and exuberance. His subject came, without strain, through the vigorously worked medium and asserted itself, as a good portrait should, as being a personality beyond ourselves. We felt that this maturely expressive presentation, was the most appropriate winner of the Award". (RBSA Newsletter, Winter 2002).
